She may have clients around the globe, but Kelly Wearstler is the ultimate LA lady. The celebrated designer — famous for her peacock-hued Hollywood Regency style and the glam homes she dreamed up for Gwen Stefani and Cameron Diaz — channeled Cali-cool vibes for her latest project, Hollywood Proper Residences, the first in a collection of luxury apartments and hotels.

She outfitted the inaugural outpost, which opened in June, with sun-drenched contemporary interiors in relaxed neutrals.

It features her own KW Furniture Collection “Emmett” club chair in stainless steel and shearling.

It’s exactly the kind of comfy seating the 48-year-old designer might have at her own LA home, which she shares with her husband, hotelier Brad Korzen, and their two sons.

Here, Wearstler reveals to Alexa a few of her fabulous finds.

Wearstler tailors the design for each Proper hotel/residence to its neighborhood (including forthcoming offerings in LA, San Francisco, Santa Monica, and Austin, Texas). Her initial Hollywood foray showcases richly burnished metals, custom wood flooring and infusions from local artists. The lobby is layered in earth tones and thoughtfully selected furniture and art pieces, evoking a sense of invitation and lounging, she says.

“I was inspired to create a soulful retreat that embraced its midcentury authenticity yet had a personality all its own,” Wearstler says of this project. “A palette of deep and turquoise blues, gold and ivory, in an array of materials and patterns, provides a sexy, subtle atmosphere. Eclectic seating areas feature 1950s and ’60s vintage furniture … including pieces from Carlo de Carli, Pierre Chapo and Dan Johnson.”

“I work with artisans creating bespoke pieces for various projects,” Wearstler says. “Over the years, that process has been an incredible education in quality and craftsmanship. My furniture collection reflects this passion for impeccable hand-wrought detail and design. It’s the culmination of years of creativity and planning. The voice is modern transitional. It has a luxurious, handsome aesthetic that feels organic and calm.”
