Get away, Valentine’s Day!
Yes, it’s almost that time of year again — the obnoxious “holiday” that is all about couples and lovers, not to mention a chance for hotels, restaurants and bars to fall in love with your money by tripling their prices.
It’s also a time when anyone who happens to be single starts empathizing with Sylvia Plath. Especially women, who are subjected to asinine questions like, “Why are you still single?” and “No date this year? That’s OK, there’s always next year!” (Despite the fact that many are likely single by design).
Making things even worse, this year the dreaded date falls on a Friday, so you can’t wake up the next day and just bury yourself in work to forget the annoyance. This year, it’s a Valentine’s Weekend.
But, nobody says you have to put up with this nonsense. Instead of falling prey to advertising campaigns, price gouging and well-meaning, yet incredibly annoying people, why not treat yourself to a mini-break? There are great, last minute flight deals on sites like JetRadar and SkyScanner, leaving you no excuse not to grab a go-bag and escape to the airport for one of these great solo getaways:
Oslo
Oslo, NorwayShutterstockRoundtrip flights to the land of Vikings on Norwegian Air that weekend are only $310. That’s less than a Valentine’s dinner special at a New York City restaurant. Not to mention the eye candy you’ll be surrounded by when you land. Seriously — who knew tall, manly men could become redundant? Go skiing, grab some seafood and homebrew before taking in the northern lights. Now that’s a good weekend!
Cuba
Vintage cars on a street in Cuba.ShutterstockYes, the sanctions are back on — but JetBlue still has direct flights from Kennedy Airport to Havana. Use a Cuba specific travel company like Cuba Candela to make all your arrangements for a seamless experience. Grab some dancing shoes and a bottle of rum, hop in a classic car and hit the dance floor. The next day, go to the beach and call your friends who will be freezing in New York and brag to them about the tan you’re getting while sipping a pina colada on the beach.
Israel
A Jaffe beach in Tel Aviv, IsraelShutterstockThe weather is beautiful right now in Israel and Tel Aviv — specifically the Jaffa section near the coast — is the perfect weekend getaway. Go thrifting through the local flea markets, take a dip in the Mediterranean and hang out at The Jaffa, a former French hospital and one-time convent which features a chic cocktail bar set in a former chapel dating back to the 13th century. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a hike (literally) in the Negev Desert with Touring Israel or go on a food tour with the chairman of the Israeli association for culinary culture, David Kishka.
St. Tropez
St. TropezShutterstockFor those of you hoping to snag yourself a billionaire — hop on over to St. Tropez and book a weekend at the Cheval Blanc owned by Bernard Arnault and LVMH. “You can’t swing a cat without hitting a billionaire there,” one frequent guest said. “They’re everywhere — who cares if they’re Russian?” Yes, it’s expensive, but if bagging a sugar daddy is your thing, consider it an investment.
Santorini
The island of Santorini in GreeceShutterstockDry January may be over (thank god), but that doesn’t mean you have to throw all your resolutions out the window. Get healthy on this break in Greece. During the summer, Santorini is packed with tourists and it’s pricey. But it’s the offseason now and you can book a room at oceanfront luxury hotels like the Santa Maris for $250. Do a spa detox, start the Mediterranean diet and go hiking before cliff diving into the ocean for your Instagram.
Denver
The skyline of Denver, ColoradoShutterstockIn the mood to flirt? Get thee to “Menver” — full of tech guys who, unlike their counterparts in San Francisco or Williamsburg, eschew metrosexuality in favor of burly manly man-ness. And, unlike in New York City, the numbers are in women and gay men’s favor. According to the local NBC affiliate: “In Denver — men of all ages, who reported to have ‘never married’ outnumbered, ‘never married’ women by about 19,000.”
