A transgender woman has been hit with backlash after declaring that she doesn’t always tell men that she is trans before accepting a drink from or kissing them.
Tayla Dow — who hails from Manchester in England — opened up on TikTok last week, in a video that has clocked up more than 2.6 million views.
Dow, 20, was described as “deceitful” and a “catfish” — and even guilty of “assault” — in comments beneath the viral clip.
In a follow-up post, the social worker expanded on her comments, saying she always discloses that she is transgender if she either goes on dates with men or proceeds to engage in sexual activity with them beyond kissing.
However, before that point, it’s “not their business,” she said.
“But in a club, like, what do you want me to do?” Dow asked. “I’m not lying. No one’s asked me if I’m trans. I’ve got nothing to lie about. I’m just not telling them for my own safety.
“If talking to someone who’s trans bothers you that much, that’s not my problem — that’s your problem,” she said in the clip. “I feel like it’s not that deep. A kiss is a kiss.”
Tayla Dow, 20, said she doesn’t always disclose the fact she is transgender before she accepts drinks from or kisses strangers on nights out. InstagramDow further told South West News Service: “If someone approaches me in a club scenario when everyone’s drunk, and I know not all men are okay with it, I don’t feel like it’s safe for me to expose everything about my life.
“If someone is to kiss me, then I don’t say anything unless I feel comfortable telling them,” she continued. “I don’t think that’s too far and I don’t see it as assault at all; people take it the wrong way.”
She also suggested that there are many personal subjects that clubgoers don’t always address right away with strangers.
“There’s men who go out to clubs and get with girls who’ve got girlfriends at home, there’s people who’ve got STDs that have sex with people after a night out and don’t tell them,” she said. “Of course, if it was anything sexual or serious, like meeting up and going on a date, then I’d tell them.”
The brunette also told the news agency: “Obviously I’m quite lucky to have a passing privilege, meaning I pass as a woman easier … But when it comes to actual dating it becomes difficult because, even if the person is okay with it, their family and friends would have to be okay with it as well and they would have to be okay with not having biological kids unless we got a surrogate.
“Some people are fine with it, some people aren’t; I guess it just depends on preference, which is fine.”
Asked what she would say to her online haters, Dow responded: “People should try and put themselves in my shoes and see it from my perspective, but obviously if you have a prejudice against trans people, then you’re never going to understand it.”
Dow said she discloses her personal information to men if they go home together or they go on a date. She said she doesn’t feel the need to do so on a night out if she’s having a meaningless kiss with a stranger. InstagramThe beauty’s TikTok videos have been hit with backlash since she made the kiss confession, with one saying Dow’s actions “should be illegal.”
“It is most certainly their business. You are taking their choice away,” another raged.
“People have a right to know who they are being intimate with. If they are the right person for you they won’t have a problem with it,” a third person posited.
However, others insisted Dow was being completely reasonable.

She should only tell them when it becomes intimate,” a TikTok follower declared, while another person shared, “Imagine walking up to someone and going ‘oh before we start this convo which may or may not go anywhere I’m trans!’”
One commenter stated that every individual harbors all kinds of personal information that they don’t reveal before kissing a stranger in a nightclub.
“I don’t tell men I’m infertile. What’s the difference?” one asked.
Dow told South West News Service she realized she was trans around the age of 13 and said social media ultimately helped her to understand herself.
After keeping her trans identity a secret until she left school, Dow finally came out at 16 when she visited her local doctor, who referred her to a specialist gender clinic. She then began transitioning with hormone replacement therapy.
Dow said she uses her popular TikTok account to help educate people on trans issues.
Posting openly on her TikTok account about her transition and the transphobic comments she receives, Tayla hoped to combat prejudiced viewpoints and abuse.
“I feel like I’ve really come a long way especially because I’m only 20. I’m still not exactly where I want to be but I’m a lot more comfortable and happy in myself,” she candidly said.
“I think the negative comments come from a place of prejudice or people not being educated enough. They don’t understand that I’m still a woman.”
