No words could convey the world’s pain.

The cover of People’s Sept. 15, 1997, issue — the one commemorating the shocking sudden death of Princess Diana — didn’t need any explanation. Not a single word.

The Diana tribute issue went on to become the second-best-selling edition ever for People — trailing only the title 9/11 issue. The Lady Di cover sold 3,198,000 copies, according to People.

In fact, the following week’s issue — with a cover photo capturing Diana’s funeral — sold 2,997,000 copies, making it the No. 3 best-seller in the magazine’s history.

It outsold the John F. Kennedy Jr. tribute issue two years later by 200,000 copies.
