The Chicago News Guild, a union representing some 75 journalists at the Chicago Sun-Times and the weekly Chicago Reader, is furiously trying to drum up another suitor for the papers’ holding company, Wrapports, to keep it out of the control of Tronc, headed by Michael Ferro.

At least two parties have stepped foward and spoken with the union and expressed interest in buying the newspapers, according to David Roeder, a consultant to the Chicago News Guild.

“There may be other bidders who have not reached out to the union,” Roeder said. He declined to reveal the identity of the two new potential suitors.

In a half-page ad that ran in Crain’s Chicago Business on Monday, the News Guild wrote, “Right now the Tribune wants to purchase both titles. We think that means the end of our publications and jobs.”

Tronc, the parent company of the larger Chicago Tribune, two weeks ago revealed it had signed a letter of intent to buy the struggling Sun-Times if no other suitors materialized by May 31.

Sources say the deadline has been extended in recent days.
