Conservative CNN analyst Scott Jennings said the reason voters cast their ballots for both Republican President-elect Donald Trump and Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was because “people are sick of fake politicians.”
Jennings discussed the phenomenon of voters splitting their ballots with CNN anchor Abby Phillip after she asked about the unusual overlap.
“The thing that Trump and AOC have in common is that they both appear to be authentically speaking what’s on their mind and what’s in their heart at any given time,” the commentator said on Monday night.
CNN panelist Scott Jennings said Trump and AOC both won over voters because of their authenticity. CNN“People are sick and tired of fake, inauthentic politicians who can only operate off of a script, who are being handed things by consultants, whose every movement and facial expression is rehearsed.”
The progressive firebrand, who easily won her race in New York’s 14th District including parts of the Bronx and Queens, said in a video on social media that some precincts voted for her and Trump, or voted for Trump and then Democrats down the rest of the ballot.
Jennings, a staunch Trump supporter, argued that Trump and AOC have one commonality that is particularly important to today’s voters.
“It’s as plain as day the rejection of the political class in favor of the authentic class and sometimes they are contradictory, and sometimes they say things that make you lift an eyebrow, but that’s the thread,” Jennings said.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said there was a “not insignificant” trend of precincts voting for both herself and Trump. Gabriella BassTrump’s “authenticity” paid off with a sweeping presidential triumph, which included winning the popular vote and all seven key swing states.
AOC supporters responded to the representative’s video on social media and explained their reasoning for supporting the two polarizing, headline-making candidates.
“It’s real simple…Trump and you care for the working class,” one supporter wrote.
President-elect Donald Trump won the Electoral College, the popular vote and all seven key swing states. APAnother said they “wanted change” so they “went with Trump and blue for the rest of the ballot to put some brakes.”
“Both of you push boundaries and force growth,” another social media user wrote.
