CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten on Thursday revealed stunning polls that showed even an “unpopular” Donald Trump could squash Democrats at the voting booth – calling it a “major wake-up moment” for the president’s rival party.

“If Democrats think that at this particular point, just because Donald Trump is unpopular, that they’re going to run away with it like a Heisman Trophy winner – that is not necessarily the case. These numbers should be a major wake-up moment for Democrats,” Enten said.

“When you match Donald Trump against his actual competition, Donald Trump comes out ahead…and that is why Democrats, in fact, cannot count their chickens just yet, because those eggs have not cracked at this particular moment,” he continued.

According to CNN polling, 45% of registered voters believe Trump is doing a better job in the White House than former vice president Kamala Harris would have, compared to just 43% who believe the same of Harris. Trump’s lead falls within the survey’s margin of error.

“This looks a heck of a lot like the election result, despite the fact that Trump’s favorable ratings aren’t too hot to trot,” Enten said.

Surveys released over the weekend from CBS, ABC and The Washington Post, NBC, CNN and The New York Times showed Trump’s favorability plummet – with one claiming he has the lowest ratings at the start of a presidential term since World War II.

His sweeping tariffs, which economists have warned could reheat inflation and even trigger a recession, have been a particular sore spot. Nearly 90% of US adults said they believe the taxes will increase prices for American consumers, according to a new Gallup poll.

But Enten argued that Trump’s unfavorable ratings don’t look nearly as drastic when viewed side-by-side with Democrats in office.

“The bottom line is when you look at Donald Trump in a vacuum, it’s one thing, but when you actually match him up against folks in the real world, all of a sudden his numbers look considerably better,” Enten said.

When matched against Democrats in Congress, what Enten called Trump’s “main competition at this point,” the president still comes out on top.

While 40% of registered voters say they trust Trump to better tackle the nation’s main issues, only 32% say the same of congressional Democrats, according to CNN polling.

“I’s not even close. It’s an eight point advantage, which in this politics, well, that’s a wide ocean,” Enten added.

The Republican party as a whole also polls well above Democrats on key issues, like immigration and the economy, which the GOP leads by 19 and nine points, respectively, according to a CNN poll.
