The Daily News is rumored to be looking for $6 million in budget cuts next year, according to one source, who noted layoffs are now feared by insiders as soon as this week.

Previously, the layoffs were said to be scheduled for after Election Day and before Thanksgiving.

Newly installed Editor-in-Chief Arthur “Chucky” Browne summoned all editorial department heads to a meeting last Saturday.

It was viewed as a meet-and-greet for Browne, the longtime News hand who was finally appointed to the top newsroom post after Jim Rich left after a year on the job.

“The timeline [for layoffs] now remains before Thanksgiving,” said one insider. “The newsroom morale is terrible. People are worried about losing their jobs right before the holidays.”

Eric Gertler’s move into the co-chairman and co-publisher role at the time of Browne’s appointment was seen as the harbinger of deeper cuts.

Gertler, a lawyer, is the nephew of owner Mort Zuckerman, who has been battling some health issues in recent years.

The paper, said to be losing close to $30 million a year in 2015, is believed today to be oozing even more red ink as website traffic has plateaued and its print circulation continues to erode.
