The battle over an abstract art book on the Gowanus Canal is raising quite a stink between book publisher Daniel Power and the Daily News.

Power, CEO of powerHouse Books, was thrilled when photographer Steven Hirsch had “Gowanus Waters” featured on the Daily News website on March 4.

But hours after the story was posted, it and the accompanying photos were pulled with no explanation.

Power called the move “spineless” and “unethical.” He feels the work was taken down because Hirsch, a freelance photographer, frequently covers Manhattan courts for The Post.

After Power complained, Daily News Editor-in-Chief Jim Rich fired off an email banning Power and his company from the teetering tabloid’s site forever.

Daily News Photo Editor Kevin Macdonald acknowledged that the tie to The Post caused the story to be pulled out of “respect” for the paper’s own reporters and editors.

“You publish a piece of cultural news coverage and your own employees whine and make you take it down. Why?” Power asked in an email to Rich. “The artist contributes to another paper. That’s not a real news operation. That’s bull**it.”

Rich shot back: “Daniel, I don’t know you, but I’m not going to sit here and listen to this bull**it. I guarantee you there will be no further coverage/business with this newsroom and your company again. Take your unprofessional nonsense elsewhere.”

Maria Bailey, the Daily News multimedia editor, is caught in the middle of the fracas.

She certainly can’t be too happy.

It is believed she spent hours putting together Hirsch’s story and photo presentation — only for it to be pulled down, leaving her with little to show for her hard work.

Rich had not returned an email from Media Ink by press time.
