The New Republic climate-change writer Emily Atkin is exiting to launch Heated, a one-person newsletter covering climate change.

“Tomorrow is my last day @newrepublic,” she tweeted on Thursday. “On Sept. 9, I’m launching a daily newsletter dedicated to original reporting + analysis on the climate crisis. It’s called HEATED, and it would mean the world to me (literally) if you signed up.”

Atkin said the newsletter will initially be free and will be marketed via Substack Inc., a subscription-hosting service that handles digital newsletters by writers including Matt Taibbi and Judd Legum, the former ThinkProgress editor-in-chief behind Popular Information.

Substack just got a $15.3 million Series A funding last month, led by Silicon Valley powerhouse Andreessen Horowitz. The company takes 10% of paid subscription revenue. It said its top dozen newsletters are raking in an average of $160,000 a year.

Days before Atkin’s public announcement, the New Republic was advertising for a replacement. “The New Republic is expanding our team and looking for an experienced full-time writer for a forthcoming vertical devoted to the climate crisis.”
