Florida jurors will learn Monday afternoon that Nick Denton and Gawker’s combined net worth is $200 million as they decide how much money will deliver a powerful — but not financially devastating — blow to Denton and his news and gossip website on top of the millions awarded last week.
Jurors already gave Hulk Hogan $115 million to compensate him for economic and emotional damages he suffered when the New York-based website Gawker.com posted his private sex tape online.
Now they’ll determine punitive damages meant to teach Gawker a lesson for their “reckless” behavior. Hogan sued Gawker in 2012 for publishing footage that showed the wrestling legend in a canopy-bed romp with his then-best friend’s wife. The jury agreed that Gawker invaded Hogan’s privacy — rejecting the website’s argument that the WWE champ was a public figure who’d made his sex life a matter of public interest.
Lawyers for Gawker and Hogan have agreed that Denton is worth $117 million and his company is worth $83 million.
The jurors return for the second, punitive phase of the trial Monday afternoon. They could deliver the punitive damages award as early as Monday evening.
