“NBC Nightly News” anchor Lester Holt announced Monday he will step down after a decade of helming the network’s evening broadcast.

Holt, 65, will remain with NBC in a full-time role at “Dateline,” where he has been the principal anchor for nearly 15 years, according to a memo shared with staffers.

Holt, who is reportedly earning a hefty wage of around $10 million per year, said he would continue anchoring the evening news until “the start of summer.”

“As a 20-year-old radio reporter on the police beat chasing breaking news around San Francisco, I could never have imagined my career path would unfold in the way it has,” Holt wrote in a note to staffers. “What an amazing ride.”

NBC News did not immediately name a successor.

Holt took the helm at “NBC Nightly News” in 2015 as the network was embroiled in controversy — after it was revealed that the evening news’ previous anchor Brian Williams had falsely claimed he was aboard a helicopter shot down in Iraq.

Following the scandal, Holt filled in for Williams as the disgraced anchor was slapped with a six-month suspension without pay. Holt was officially given the job after it was decided Williams would move to left-leaning MSNBC.

The evening news has remained firmly in second place in the ratings behind ABC and well ahead of CBS under Holt’s watch.

As of mid-February, NBC’s nightly broadcast raked in about 6.7 million viewers, trailing the 8.3 million of ABC’s “World News Tonight” with David Muir, according to Nielsen. CBS’ “Evening News,” which is already backtracking on a controversial overhaul to its format after parting ways with Norah O’Donnell, drew 4.5 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

Holt “has led the network during some of the country’s most fraught and challenging times in the past decade,” Janelle Rodriguez, NBC News’ executive vice president of programming, wrote in a note to staffers.

“Quite simply, Lester is the beating heart of this news organization,” she added.

Senior national correspondent Tom Llamas could be in line for Holt’s anchor chair, The Post previously reported. Llamas has been impatiently waiting for Holt to retire in what looked like a “slow-motion coup d’état” at 30 Rock, according to the Ankler.

Holt joins an exodus of veteran journalists at NBC since the start of the year that includes “Today” show host Hoda Kotb and Chuck Todd from “Meet the Press.”

His exit also follows a massive shakeup at sister channel MSNBC, which canned rabid anti-Trump host Joy Reid on Sunday, and canceled shows anchored by Ayman Mohyeldin, Katie Phang and Jonathan Capehart, sources told The Post.
