When Gannett officially confirmed in July that the USA Today publisher was taking over the North Jersey Media Group — including the state’s No. 2 paper, The Record — Garden State employees were told that they were all officially part of the Gannett family.

Gannett paid the Borg family, which owned NJMG since 1930, an estimated $40 million for the 121-year-old paper and sister titles and related websites.

But some employees learned this week that Gannett family life can be tough: Some jobs would only be temporary.

Copy editors, designers and production people were summoned to an all-hands meeting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and told that they would all have to apply for new jobs, as those departments were going to be consolidated at the offices of a sister publication miles away.

They will learn on Oct. 15 if they have jobs. No word on how many will be getting pink slips.
