Alexis Gelber, a one-time managing editor of Newsweek International, has been tapped as the new editor-in-chief of the Manhattan weekly newspaper publisher, Straus News.

Gelber fills the post created when Kyle Pope jumped ship on Sept. 1 to become editor-in-chief of the Columbia Journalism Review.

Gelber, who had a 28-year career at Newsweek when it was still owned by the Washington Post Co., takes over the top editorial job at the company whose titles include Our Town, West Side Spirit, Chelsea News and Our Town Downtown.

Since 2011, Gelber has been teaching at the New York University graduate school of journalism — which she plans to continue.

She also worked on The Human Face of Big Data with photographer Rick Smolan.
