Two major publishing companies are facing class action lawsuits in Michigan over the right to sell subscribers’ names to outside data firms.

Time Inc., the publisher of People, Time and Sports Illustrated, and Mansueto Ventures, the publisher of Fast Company and Inc., broke state privacy laws, it is alleged in the suits.

“Unfortunately for its subscribers, Time supplements its sales and advertising revenue by secretly selling their statutorily protected information — including their full names, titles of magazines subscribed to and home addresses (collectively ‘Personal Reading Information’) — to data miners and other unrelated third party companies,” claims one of the suits, filed by Carolyn Perlin .

A similar suit was filed by the same law firm Perlin used — in the name of Julie Bush, a Mansueto customer.

Ari Scharg, a lawyer representing Perlin and Bush, said he has already reached settlements, all in Michigan, with three other publishers over the same issue — Meredith, which settled for $7.5 million, Rodale, for $4.5 million, and Bauer, for $750,000.
