Nick Swisher is in the lineup but Alex Rodriguez is not one day after each player left the Yankees’ game against the Tigers.
“He’s still a little sore,” Joe Girardi said of Rodriguez, who has tightness in his left calf. “We’ll see how he is after he goes through all of his treatments today. We’ll see if he’s available as a pinch hitter or anything for us tonight.”
Brett Gardner bats leadoff, with Derek Jeter second, Robinson Cano cleanup and Nick Swisher fifth.
“With Alex out I thought I wanted to put Swish a little bit further down behind Robbie Cano,” Girardi said.
Ramiro Pena plays third base in Rodriguez’s place and bats ninth.
Swisher has been dealing with pain in his right arm.
“He’s had this tennis elbow off and on for a while now,” Girardi said of Swisher. “Really the big thing is don’t swing and miss. That’s it, and make sure you don’t get the ball too far out in front.”
Tonight’s lineup:
Gardner LF
Jeter SS
Teixeira 1B
Cano 2B
Swisher RF
Posada C
Thames DH
