Two days of rest has not been enough for Alex Rodriguez.
The Yankees third baseman remained out of the lineup Tuesday with an injured oblique that he suffered Saturday. Rodriguez sat out Sunday, but was hopeful Monday’s off day would give him enough time to return for the opener against the Blue Jays.
He said he plans to play Wednesday.
Rodriguez took 40 to 50 swings in the indoor cage with hitting coach Kevin Long watching then fielded grounded balls during batting practice. He tested the injury by throwing balls to first extra hard.
“The swings felt pretty good,’’ Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez, who has been on the DL in each of the past three seasons, said he would have played if it was later in the season rather than the middle of the first month.
The decision to sit Rodriguez last night was a three-headed one and included Rodriguez, Joe Girardi and trainer Gene Monahan, who had the biggest say.
“(Gene) thought it was best to give him one more day,’’ Girardi said of the trainer, who has a history of being very cautious with players’ health.
Considering Rodriguez left Saturday’s game, didn’t play Sunday, Monday was dark, he sat Tuesday night and Thursday is another off day, the safe play would be to hold Rodriguez out of the lineup so he could be fully recovered for Friday night in Baltimore.
Eric Chavez, who had the game-winning hit in place of Rodriguez on Sunday night against the Rangers, got another start at third base.
