Brandon Drury made his second start at first base since getting called up on Friday. Both have come against left-handers, but that doesn’t mean there will be a platoon at first between Drury and Greg Bird. Boone said he plans to get Drury spot starts at first, third and designated hitter, but doesn’t expect to turn Bird into a part-time player, despite his struggles.
“We really want to get ‘Birdie’ going because of what he means to our lineup when he’s good, and when he is going good, he handled lefties really well,” manager Aaron Boone said before the Yankees’ 8-5 win over the Braves Tuesday night at the Stadium. “We’ll manage our way through [this]. That’s kind of day to day and week to week, who we want to get in there and what matchups [present themselves]. But I wouldn’t say necessarily [Drury is in] here against lefties.”
The 25-year-old Bird has just two hits in 20 at-bats against lefties and is hitting just .198 after missing the season’s first 48 games following right ankle surgery to remove a bone spur. Drury went 0-for-3 Tuesday and was lifted after seven innings for defensive purposes.
Out since June 8 with a pair of strained hamstrings, Masahiro Tanaka will make a rehab start Wednesday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The veteran right-hander, who is 7-2 with a 4.58 ERA over 72 ²/₃ innings, will throw 65 to 75 pitches, according to Boone, and is expected to return to the Yankees’ rotation next week in Baltimore. “I’ll mix it in,” Boone said.
Boone wore his Yankees uniform top for the first time Tuesday, but said there was no special meaning behind it.
“People ask me about it a lot,” he said with a smile. “I decided to wear it tonight.”
But it won’t become a daily part of his wardrobe.
