TORONTO — The world will get its first look at what’s expected to be a powerful Yankees lineup on Thursday with a familiar face at the top: Brett Gardner.
New manager Aaron Boone opted not to put Aaron Judge in the leadoff spot, a possibility he discussed doing during spring training, and instead has Judge hitting second, followed by Giancarlo Stanton, Gary Sanchez and the switch-hitting Aaron Hicks against lefty J.A. Happ.
The three right-handed sluggers — Judge, Stanton and Sanchez — won’t be broken up by a left-handed hitter, due in part to the absence of Greg Bird, who underwent surgery on his right ankle on Tuesday and won’t return until June at the earliest.
“I think Bird being out of the lineup maybe contributes to that a little bit,” Boone said of the order, which includes Didi Gregorius hitting sixth, Brandon Drury seventh, Neil Walker eighth and Tyler Austin ninth.
“We’ll have two true lefties [Gardner and Gregorius] going against Happ,” Boone said. “I don’t hate the matchup for [Gardner]. With their pen being more right-handed, the matchups late in the game push for [Gardner] being in that spot.”
Gardner is 9-for-31 versus Happ in his career, with an OPS of .861 against the southpaw.
Another left-handed hitter, Tyler Wade, who impressed for much of spring training, isn’t in the lineup, but Boone said he would play “two or three” days of the four-game series in Toronto.
Boone preferred Walker’s ability to switch hit and the right-handed Austin figures to be a better matchup than Wade.
“I’d love to play every day,” said Wade, who also changed his uniform number from 39 to 12. Jace Peterson wore 12 during most of spring training after Chase Headley wore it before he was dealt to San Diego. “But I just have to be ready.”
Walker isn’t expected to play all four games, so Wade could fill in there.
“Wade’s gonna play a lot,” Boone said.
The rookie manager is about to find out how successful his first spring was.
“One thing I guess I struggled with is how to build guys up, how to keep guys rested in spring training,” Boone said. “And I feel like, for the most part, guys are in a really good place and ready to go as we tee it off [Thursday].”
