ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Aaron Hicks was scratched before the Yankees’ 3-1 win over the Rays on Tuesday night at Tropicana Field with a right shin bruise suffered in Sunday’s game. He was replaced by Clint Frazier, with Brett Gardner shifting from left field to center. Hicks went down in pain after fouling a ball off his shin in the eighth inning Sunday, but stayed in the game.

Aaron Boone said Hicks felt “pretty sore” doing his pregame routine. He got an X-ray, but Boone was hopeful Hicks would play Wednesday.

Hicks had shown signs of snapping his slow start, going 10-for-27 with three extra-base hits and five walks in his previous nine games.

Aroldis Chapman had an issue with a nail on his pitching hand, which got him a visit from the training staff in the ninth, but he remained in the game and Boone didn’t think it would be an issue. … Gio Urshela returned to the lineup Tuesday after missing the previous three games with a left knee injury suffered Thursday against Houston.

Luis Severino has been throwing 40 pitches with a hitter in the box, but he has yet to face live hitters yet in his rehab from last year’s Tommy John surgery.

Deivi Garcia rebounded from a rough first minor league outing at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with a solid showing Tuesday.

The right-hander threw five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and just one walk. He’d walked seven in just 3 ¹/₃ innings in his debut with SWB last week.

The 21-year-old spent much of the early part of the season at the alternate site in Scranton and made one start with the Yankees, allowing two runs and three walks in four innings in Baltimore on April 26.
