Aaron Boone picked Saturday to give two of his hottest hitters a day of rest.
So a few more suddenly red-hot bats just carried the day instead for an offense that is beginning to find its stride.
Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres combined for five hits and six RBIs to fuel the Yankees in a 6-4 win over the Tigers at Yankee Stadium.
Even with Giancarlo Stanton and Gio Urshela on the bench, the Yankees racked up eight more hits — their fifth straight game with at least eight hits. They all stayed in the park, a day after their five-home run outburst, but Judge and Torres came up when it mattered the most.
“I feel like the first couple weeks, we lost too many opportunities on base,” said Torres, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and is now batting 13-for-39 over his past 10 games. “Now we always have a guy get a hit and get RBIs and things like that. As a group, we’re more confident right now. We’re hitting really well. Try to continue that and get better every game.”
The Yankees’ Aaron Judge (left) and Gleyber Torres celebrate after the Yankees beat the Tigers on Saturday. APJudge, who had been out of the lineup on Wednesday and Thursday with unspecified lower-body soreness, continued to mash upon his return. After crushing a pair of home runs Friday, he went 3-for-5 Saturday with three RBIs. His double in the fifth inning gave the Yankees the lead for good, 2-1.
The Yankees nearly wasted a bases-loaded, no-out chance in the sixth inning, but Judge came through with two outs for a two-run single to make it 4-1. Two batters later, Torres added another two-run single for the 6-1 lead.
“I think it’s just at-bats,” said Judge, who finished 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. “You can’t really be judged off of 15, 30, 40 at-bats. We gotta work ourselves into the season and just get reps. That’s what it really comes down to is repetition. Practice makes perfect. Once you practice it, go through a couple bad slumps, bad times, just continue to work — that’s what this team continues to do.”
DJ LeMahieu also provided a spark at the top of the lineup, getting on base three times with two singles and a walk while scoring twice against Tigers starter Spencer Turnbull.
“We were able to wear him down a little bit and eventually get some big hits to throw another good number up there offensively,” Boone said.
