BOSTON — Not even one of Aaron Judge’s top postseason performances was enough to give the Yankees a win in Friday’s ALDS Game 1 loss to the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Judge, who went just 1-for-20 with 16 strikeouts in last year’s ALDS against Cleveland, had three hits Friday night, including a homer off closer Craig Kimbrel that pulled the Yankees within a run of Boston in the top of the ninth.
The rest of the offense, though, couldn’t deliver the critical blow. Luke Voit was the only other Yankee with multiple hits on the night, and the offense went just 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. The Yankees wound up leaving 10 runners on base, with Gleyber Torres striking out with the bases loaded in the sixth.
An inning later, they loaded the bases again, but scored just once, as Giancarlo Stanton struck out — one of his four whiffs on the night — before Voit grounded out to drive in a run and Didi Gregorius bounced to second to end the threat.
Judge’s ninth-inning blast off Kimbrel was also the Yankees’ lone homer of the night.
As Boston manager Alex Cora reiterated before the series began, that’s the key to limiting the Yankee offense.
“You know how I feel about them, keeping the ball in the ballpark,’’ Cora said. “They’ve been hitting the ball out of the ballpark for a while.”
Judge’s blast was his second in as many games in the postseason. He also drilled a homer in the first inning of the Yankees’ wild-card victory over the A’s last Wednesday in The Bronx that sent them to the ALDS.
He finished the regular season in a funk after returning from a chip fracture in his right wrist that he suffered on July 26. Judge homered just once in a dozen games and went 9-for-41.
However, he showed promising signs in the final weekend of the year, with two hits — including a homer on Sept. 28 at Fenway Park — before reaching base three times against Oakland in the wild-card game, adding a double, as well.
