Aaron Judge ended his 2021 season by saying he wanted “to be a Yankee for life.”
Brian Cashman said Wednesday he had not spoken to Judge’s agent about a potential contract extension before his final year of arbitration, one season away from free agency.
Judge, who will turn 30 in April, reiterated a desire to remain a Yankee for the rest of his career Thursday, saying in an online Q&A with Fanatics “that would be a wish of mine, a goal of mine, to finish my career as a Yankee, but you never know what the cards hold. If it was up to me, I’d be a Yankee for the next 10 years, for sure.”
Judge had his most productive season in 2021 since his rookie year, with 39 homers, 98 RBIs in 148 games (all trailing just that 2017 rookie season), after he dealt with numerous injuries in the previous three seasons.
The Yankees don’t typically extend players before free agency, but Cashman said Judge is “a special player, so it’s definitely a special case.”
Aaron Judge reiterated Thursday that he wants to be a Yankee for his entire career. Charles Wenzelberg/New York PostAaron Hicks and Luis Severino were signed to extensions prior to the 2019 season and neither has worked out. Both Hicks and Severino have been sidelined with injuries for most of the time since getting their new deals.
