Addison Russell is back, four games after his suspension concluded.
The Cubs’ shortstop is returning following a 40-game suspension for violating the sport’s domestic violence policy late last season, according to David Kaplan of NBC Chicago, getting called up from Triple-A Iowa for Wednesday’s game against the Marlins at Wrigley Field.
Russell’s ex-wife, Melisa Reidy, alleged physical and emotional abuse and cooperated with an investigation led by MLB. After initially denying those allegations, Russell owned up to them somewhat in February.
“What I do want to say is, I am accountable for my past actions,” Russell said then. “I’m not proud of the person I was. But I do want to own this issue and take responsibility for the hurt and the pain I have caused Melisa. And for that, I am sorry.”
As part of his suspension, the 25-year-old Russell had to go through counseling. It is uncertain what his role will be, with Javy Baez emerging as the team’s starting shortstop in his absence.
