Alison Bowles and fiancé Adeiny Hechavarría, a former Mets and Yankees shortstop, never intended to go nine months without physically seeing each other.
But with COVID-19 restrictions overseas, where Hechavarría played for the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league, the couple’s reunion was ultimately pushed to November, when they met up in the Maldives.

Fortunately, the almost year-long separation flew by for Bowles, who has been busy running her lifestyle site, WanderInHeels.com. The fashion model, 25, says the idea for a website came about years ago after she started sharing more travel content on Instagram, where she boasts nearly 250,000 followers.
Alison Bowles runs the lifestyle travel site, Wander In Heels. Instagram“Growing up land-locked in the Midwest, I never thought that I would be able to travel around the world and so, I was just really inspired to post all that content,” Bowles says. “And I was getting so many questions, ‘How did you travel here? What is the culture like?’ … And I was like, you know what, I’m going to make a website, and make a travel guide for everywhere I go, so that way when I get messages, I can say, ‘Hey, I wrote a blog about this, I’d love to help you book your trip.'”
Wander in Heels now features travel guides to dreamy destinations, including Tulum and Monaco, as Bowles continues to work with the tourism boards of different countries. But when the pandemic hit in early 2020, Bowles, much like the rest of the world, was forced to quarantine at home. There, she got creative with her content.
“I pivoted to more videos, I got involved in TikTok and just started doing fun content at home during that time,” Bowles says of her videos, noting that when traveling did pick back up again, she was on the road again — from Antigua to Aruba and later Dubai — in full-force.
“I think I traveled to five different countries in that season, which is a lot for the short amount of time,” Bowles says. “Honestly, it picked back up more than I thought it would.”
Alison Bowles InstagramBowles’ site now includes a section about traveling in the COVID-19 era, and, of course, her recent romantic getaway with Hechavarría, 32, whom she’s been engaged to since 2019.
“It was definitely a test for our relationship,” Bowles says of hers and Hechavarría’s time apart. “And I think coming out of that I knew that that was going to be a defining moment for us in our relationship … and I can honestly say that it has been so good for us in the end because just being back together has been so amazing.”
Although it remains to be seen what next year will bring, between COVID-19 and the current MLB lockout, Bowles hopes she gets the opportunity to see Hechavarría physically play again.
“I haven’t seen him play in real life since the Braves playoffs in 2019, and I think I saw one game in spring training in 2020,” she says of Hechavarría’s two seasons in Atlanta. “It is really sad, especially because with his career, it doesn’t last forever and I want to be part of it, but with COVID, I haven’t been able to do that.”

“In the new year I want to keep expanding my career as much as I can,” Bowles says. “I want to continue educating others about different cultures with Wander in Heels, and just keep expanding on that.
