ATLANTA — The Mets say left fielder Moises Alou has started hitting for the first time since undergoing hernia surgery in early March.

“It’s encouraging to know that he’s swinging the bat,’’ Randolph said. “I already know that he’s in shape. I’m sure he can’t wait to get back.’’

Alou is expected to start jogging again soon, and both he and the Mets are still hoping he can be back in the lineup by the end of the month or early May.
