There is no series better than the Subway Series. Shame on MLB for even considering these foolish two-game series for such a tremendous rivalry. The Subway Series is a guaranteed sellout since it began in 1997. But for some reason, they continue to do these dopey two-game sets on weekdays instead of the traditional three-game weekend series. And especially this year, where both teams are in first place and playing great baseball, it’s not fair to the fans of New York baseball that they are getting four, instead of six matchups.

Either way, it’s always fun when the Mets play the Yankees. It could end up being a World Series preview if everything goes right for both sides and some additions are made before the trade deadline. To look ahead to the two-game tilt at Citi Field, we bring you a new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and I. Our special guest is Mets legend Edgardo Alfonzo.

‘Amazin’ But True’ Opening Segment with Jake & Figgie:

  • METS AVOID SWEEP: Pete Alonso’s big homer and four-RBI night propels the Mets to a much-needed win over the Padres. Things got shaky in the end and the bullpen, especially left-handed relievers is a big question mark for this team.
  • BABY GOT ‘BACH: Daniel Vogelbach made his Mets debut Sunday after they acquired him from the Pirates for Colin Holderman. He had a single, walk and run scored Sunday night. Watching him run the bases is truly a joy. He will likely play DH against right-handed pitching, but the Mets still badly need to go get another bat. The top options seem to be Josh Bell, Trey Mancini or J.D. Martinez. Mets have to go get at least one great reliever as well, preferably a lefty.
  • SUBWAY SERIES PREVIEW: This will be a fun one. Both teams have not been this good in July at same time since 2000, when they met for the World Series later that season. Mets have a good chance to win both with Taijuan Walker and likely Max Scherzer pitching.
  • GIL HODGES HOF: A well-deserved honor after taking 30-plus years to finally happen. The Gil Hodges bobblehead giveaway at Citi Field looks cool from Sunday. Hodges was an integral part in turning the Mets franchise around in 1969. Hodges was a big part of Figgie’s childhood in Brooklyn because the Gil Hodges Little League was one of the better ones to play in.

Edgardo Alfonzo Interview: Mets legend (1995-2002), Staten Island Ferryhawks manager

  • OLD TIMER’S DAY: Will play in Old Timer’s Day on Aug. 27. Has been taking some swings and ready to hit in the game.
  • SUBWAY SERIES: Always exciting and great for New York when they played the Yankees. Didn’t have to travel and the city was pumped about it.
  • 2000 WORLD SERIES: Had trouble sleeping because he was thinking about it. Was not eating much at all. Lots of things going on in his head. Tough series loss.
  • ALIAS NAMES: Sometimes used name Antonio Banderas as an alias on the road.
