The Mets stink right now.

There’s no other way around it.

They are playing bad baseball.

Their starters are not going deep enough into games.

The bullpen is not great and is getting worn out.

The lineup is not scoring enough runs.

The team is underachieving by a mile as they are under .500.

Buck Showalter said it after the game: “Play better.”

The chance for that starts again Tuesday against another bad team in the Reds.

It’s a long season, but this team needs to get on a run.

They got their three best pitchers going, so now is the time to win some games.

To talk about the rough weekend series against the Rockies and where the team stands, we bring you a new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and me.

We are joined by former Mets outfielder and fan favorite from the 2000 Mets, Benny Agbayani.

Benny was a great underdog story and a guy who always played hard and worked hard…so much so, that he did the interview on his break working at Hawaiian Airlines!

Amazin’ But True Podcast with Jake Brown & Nelson Figueroa:

  • ROCKY MOUNTAIN: The Mets once again could not put it all together against the Rockies. They need to start winning series against these bad teams. The middle relief was not good on Sunday. Jimmy Yacabonis was due to get rocked. Tommy Hunter continues to get rocked. Daniel Vogelbach can’t get thrown out on the bases like he did Sunday.
  • ROTATION ISSUES: Starting pitching is not going deep enough into games and it is hurting the bullpen. They got their big three going this week against the Reds. They need these guys to get into the seventh inning so they aren’t using these struggling middle relievers. Carlos Carrasco is now delayed after getting a virus, so Joey Lucchesi may get one or two more starts.
  • LINEUP CONCERNS: Should Brett Baty continue hitting fifth? Should the Mets move Starling Marte down in the lineup until his bat gets going? Francisco Lindor is driving in runs, but needs to start getting more hits.

Benny Agbayani Interview: Former Mets outfielder

  • METS LOVE: Probably got the loudest ovation on Mets Old Timers’ Day last year. Loves New York and the Mets fans. Meant a lot to him and his kids, who were not born when he was playing. Misses New York and wishes he didn’t get traded.
  • 2000 METS: Had a lot of veterans and good leadership on that team. They had a good manager in Bobby Valentine that made them realize they can go all the way.
  • UNDERDOG: Played with an underdog mentality as a 30th-round draft pick. Had to grind it out. Chose to go play in Japan because it was best for his family at the time. It was not the same playing in Colorado and Boston as his Mets days.
  • METS MEMORIES: Favorite teammate was Jay Payton. They were the young guys and the underdogs. Funniest guy was Derek Bell. “He was a weird, funny guy.” Favorite Mets memory was the grand slam on opening day in Japan.
