Life comes at you fast. The Mets’ lead in the NL East was 10.5 games at the end of May. As of Oct. 3, they are two games behind the Braves.

The Mets were swept by the Braves over a miserable weekend in Atlanta. The offense did not put up enough runs. The starting pitchers didn’t dominate. The Braves looked like the better team, despite the Mets having the upper hand for a good portion of the season.

The result? The Mets will likely have to play in the NL Wild Card round, potentially against the Padres in a best-of-three series at Citi Field. It was a terrible weekend and the Mets will have to find themselves this week, and hopefully get Starling Marte back. They desperately need him for Friday’s Game 1 of the wild-card series.

To talk about the nightmare weekend in Atlanta, we bring you a new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and me. We hosted the show from the Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City.

Amazin’ But True’ LIVE Podcast from Ocean Casino Resort with Jake Brown & Nelson Figueroa:

  • RANT: I’ve been positive about this Mets team all year. I haven’t truly panicked once. But this weekend got me angry and Mets fans are allowed to be frustrated by it. The only way they win the division is if they sweep the Nationals and the Marlins can magically sweep the Braves. The lineup in Atlanta sucked and did not do enough. The starting pitching was not great, but the Mets need more than two or three runs.
  • MARTE/LINEUP: Come back, Marte. The Mets lineup is not the same without him. Who knows if he even can return before next Tuesday. Tyler Naquin is no Marte. Mark Vientos is overmatched. Mark Canha looks tired.
  • FRANCISCO ALVAREZ: Figgie was not a fan of the timing of the Alvarez call-up. He should have been called up earlier. Putting him up to hit Friday in the ninth inning against Kenley Jansen was a mistake. They were asking the kid to do a lot in his first game.
  • WILD CARD: The good news is that the Mets are still going to the playoffs. They will probably win 100 games. All hope is not lost. The problem is they are 2-4 against the Padres this season and this is a much better Padres team than the one they faced earlier. They pray the Phillies can end up in the fifth spot, but it would take a lot of help from the Giants winning over the Padres and the Phillies beating the Astros for that to happen.
