Jason Heyward will be back in Dodgers blue next season and not pinstripes as one Yankees star appeared to hope.
The veteran outfielder and the Dodgers agreed to terms on a one-year, $9 million deal on Monday, The Post’s Joel Sherman confirmed.
Heyward is coming off a bounce-back season in Tinseltown where he saw his offensive numbers trend upwards.
After being cut midseason by the Chicago Cubs in 2022, Heyward arrived in Los Angeles on a minor league contract that he signed in December of that same year and made the big league club out of spring training.
In 124 games last season, Heyward hit .269 while recording 15 home runs and an .813 OPS.
His success defensively in the outfield allowed the Dodgers to get creative with the way they deployed star Mookie Betts, which included time for him at second base and shortstop.
Heyward played a majority of his time in right field, but did see 120 innings in center field and 25 innings in right field.
Outfielder Jason Heyward is sticking with the Dodgers. USA TODAY Sports via Reuters ConThe decision to bring Heyward back likely means that Betts will get the chance to play infield once again in 2024.
“I think it allows us some flexibility,” Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes told reporters earlier this month, according to the OC Register. “Kind of how it was set up in the second half of last year is what we’re envisioning right now. But if there’s an opportunity that changes that, that’s a conversation I’m sure we can have. But as of right now, we feel Mookie will take down a good amount of second base.”
Yankees rookie Anthony Volpe had appeared to pitch Heyward on coming to The Bronx as a free agent.
“I ran into Jason Heyward a couple of weeks ago and I said he’d look good without a beard on,” Volpe said earlier this month at the MLB Flagship Store in Manhattan.
Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe wanted Jason Heyward to join the Yankees. Robert Sabo for NY PostThis upcoming year will be Heyward’s second with the Dodgers.
He spent seven seasons with the Cubs and prior to that had a stint with the St. Louis Cardinals and played five seasons in Atlanta.
