The Yankees go into Thursday in an odd position. More accurately, their position is, well, a tad unclear.

According to ESPN’s standings as of Thursday morning, New York is in second place, a game behind the Red Sox, despite holding a better winning percentage than Boston. According to MLB’s official stats, the Yankees are in first, but still one game back of Boston.

“Standings are listed on the basis of winning percentage,” Elias Sports Bureau, MLB’s official statistician, told The Post. “The rules of the game state that the team with the highest winning percentage is division champion. ‘Games behind’ are merely for convenience.”

To be clear, the Yankees officially are in first place, despite being a game behind the Red Sox. Boston has played six more games than the Yankees, holding a 47-22 record as opposed to the Yankees’ 43-20 mark, thus the confusion.

Until the Yankees catch up in games played, it’s possible the standings continue to look strange.
