With the trade deadline looming, the Astros have taken a potential Mets target off the board.
Baltimore is trading utility man Trey Mancini to Houston, as first reported by The Athletic Monday afternoon.
The move is part of a three-team trade between the Orioles, Rays and Astros. It sends Mancini and right-handed pitcher Jayden Murray — via the Rays — to Houston. The Orioles get righties Seth Johnson (Rays) and Chayce McDermott (Astros) and Tampa lands outfielder Jose Siri from the Astros, according to ESPN.
Mancini is hitting .268 with a .751 OPS and 10 home runs this season. He figures to see frequent playing time at first base, taking over for the scuffling Yuli Gurriel, and will add a powerful right-handed presence to the heart of Houston’s lineup amidst the left-handed Yordan Alvarez, Kyle Tucker and Michael Brantley.
Mancini became one of baseball’s feel-good stories last season, when he clubbed 21 home runs and won American League Comeback Player of the Year honors after missing all of the 2020 season battling Stage 3 colon cancer.
Trey Mancini is headed to the Astros. APThe resurgent Orioles entered Monday just three games out of the final AL Wild Card spot, boasting a record of 51-51. Now, though, any postseason pursuit will take place without one of their top bats.
