Things escalated quickly in a tense – and bizarre – scene during Tuesday night’s game between the Astros and Twins.
With Jose Altuve up to bat in the bottom of the fifth inning, Twins pitcher Aaron Sanchez threw a pitch well inside that appeared to graze Altuve on the thigh. The home plate umpire awarded Altuve first base – but the Astros second baseman was clearly not happy, chucking his bat and exchanging words with Sanchez as he walked down the baseline.
Both of the benches then began to clear – which is when things got really weird.
Jose Altuve gestures toward Sanchez on the mound ROOT SportsTwins manager Rocco Baldelli and pitching coach Pete Maki, among others, came out to the mound to calm Sanchez down after the pitcher was clearly fired up in his exchange with Altuve. But the umpires deemed the exchange a mound visit – meaning the Twins had to take Sanchez out of the game.
Baldelli unleashed on the umpires for several moments, at one point storming out toward the mound and gesturing in that direction. The umpires responded by ejecting him from the game.
