Week 5 of Awards Wednesday and we are wondering when (if?) the real Mariano Rivera and Carlos Delgado will be showing up?
AL MVP
1. Alex Rodriguez, Yankees. 2. Vladimir Guerrero, Angels. 3. Magglio Ordonez, Tigers. A-Rod and Vlad have essentially made this a two-man race all year (Last weekâs leader: A-Rod).
AL ANTI-MVP
1. Jason Kendall, Aâs. 2. Shea Hillenbrand, Angels. 3. Josh Barfield, Indians. Kendall has been so bad (.164 batting average, one extra-base hit in 110 at-bats) that Oakland should consider catching Mike Piazza on occasion when he returns from the DL, just to get a legit bat into the order (Last weekâs leader: Michael Young, Rangers).
NL MVP
1. Barry Bonds, Giants. 2. Jose Reyes, Mets. 3. Todd Helton, Rockies. I look upon Bonds and Curt Schilling having a public dispute much like I would in hearing that Iran and Iraq are having discord. In other words, it is hard to find the good guy. (Last weekâs leader: Bonds).
NL ANTI-MVP
1. Jim Edmonds, Cardinals. 2. Scott Rolen, Cardinals. 3. David Eckstein, Cardinals. The Cardinalsâ rotation has been damaged by defections and injuries, and the only way to mount a serious defense of their championship was going to be to have their offense perform. But Edmonds, Rolen and Eckstein are flat out destroying the team (Last weekâs leader: Adam LaRoche, Pirates).
AL CY YOUNG
1. Josh Beckett, Red Sox. 2. Dan Haren, Aâs. 3. Chad Gaudin, Aâs. With all the talk about Daisuke Matsuzaka, the strength of Bostonâs rotation has been Beckett, Schilling and Tim Wakefield, who have been as good as any teamâs top trio in the sport (Last weekâs leader: Roy Halladay, Blue Jays).
AL ANTI-CY YOUNG
1. Jeff Weaver, Mariners. 2. Jae Seo, Devil Rays. 3. Mariano Rivera, Yankees. Who ever thought Rivera would find himself associated with Weaver on this kind of list? (Last weekâs leader: Weaver).
NL CY YOUNG
1. John Maine, Mets. 2. Tim Hudson, Braves. 3. Brad Penny, Dodgers. A great race is forming here among this trio and also the Cubsâ Rich Hill, San Diegoâs Jake Peavy, Milwaukeeâs Chris Capuano and Houstonâs Roy Oswalt (Last weekâs leader: Maine).
NL ANTI-CY YOUNG
1. Adam Eaton, Phillies. 2. Kip Wells, Cardinals. 3. Dontrelle, Willis, Marlins. Willis is 5-1, but he has a 5.44 ERA and righties are hitting .340 against him (Last weekâs leader: Mark Redman, Braves).
AL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
1. Hideki Okajima, Red Sox. 2. Joakim Soria, Royals. 3. Reggie Willits, Angels. Right now it is a very bad year for rookies in the AL (Last weekâs leader: Okajima).
NL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
1. Josh Hamilton, Reds. 2. Henry Owens, Marlins. 3. Joe Smith, Mets. Owens (four saves, 1.96 ERA) and Matt Lindstrom (2.51 ERA) were the players the Mets dealt to Florida for Jason Vargas and Adam Bostick (Last weekâs leader: Hamilton).
SPECIAL AWARD OF THE WEEK
NL ALL-STAR TEAM
C-Russ Martin, Dodgers. 1B-Todd Helton, Rockies. 2B-Chase Utley, Phillies. SS-Jose Reyes, Mets. 3B-Miguel Cabrera, Marlins. LF-Barry Bonds, Giants. CF-Aaron Rowand, Phillies. RF-Shawn Green, Mets. There were tough calls all over the place, specifically Helton over the Cubsâ Derrek Lee; Utley over Atlantaâs Kelly Johnson; Reyes over Milwaukeeâs J.J. Hardy, Philadelphiaâs Jimmy Rollins and Floridaâs Hanley Ramirez; and Rowand over the Metsâ Carlos Beltran.
FIVE BEST TEAMS
1. Red Sox. 2. Brewers T3. Mets/Braves. T5. Indians/Tigers. Will the addition of Roger Clemens ultimately put the Yankees back in this discussion? (Last weekâs leader: Mets).
FIVE WORST TEAMS
1. Nationals. 2. Royals. 3. Rangers. 4. Cardinals. 5. Devil Rays. Teams are going to use the Nationals to do what the Cubs did in the last week: get healthy (Last weekâs leader: Nationals).
