Vitals: 21 years old (turned 21 February 12); 6-foot-3, 195 pounds; both this and throws right-handed; drafted by the Mets in the 24th round of the 2008 draft out of the Pendleton School (HS) in Bradenton, Fla.; was ranked 14th on this list in 2010.
Performance: After a strong first full season in professional ball (9-6, 3.45 ERA in 125 innings) with Low-A Savannah, Allen took a big step back in 2010 with High-A St. Lucie. The right-hander, who went to the same high school as top Yankees’ prospect J.R. Murphy, went 6-8 with a 5.24 ERA with St. Lucie, and was one of several prospects on the St. Lucie staff who struggled last year. Allen’s biggest problem was his control – he actually had one more walk (54) than strikeouts (53).
Outlook: The Mets rarely went over slot under the Omar Minaya regime, so to see them throw $150,000 at Allen to get him to sign in 2008 instead of attend N.C. State is a sign of the promise they saw in him at the time. But after his rough 2010 season, Allen will look to try to get back to the way he pitched in 2009 instead. He will be an interesting test case for the Mets’ new front office. Will they push him to Double-A Binghamton, despite his struggles, or allow him to start the year again in High-A? The bet here is on the latter, with a possible promotion if he performs well while repeating in St. Lucie.
