DENVER — Carlos Beltran‘s unlikely comeback bid is a go.
The Mets’ All-Star center fielder, out since late June with a bone bruise in his right knee, was cleared to resume playing today and will make his first minor-league rehab assignment Wednesday for Single-A Brooklyn.
Today’s check-up, which was believed to have included an MRI exam, was the last major hurdle in Beltran’s attempt to return for the final month of the season even though the Mets are out of the playoff race. The Mets released a statement today that made no mention of whether the bone bruise — which had doubled in size in July — was still a factor.
The news release, however, did imply that the bruise had lessened by saying Beltran would play without a knee brace after being examined by team Dr. David Altchek.
Beltran, who named an All-Star for the fifth time this season but was unable to play in the game in St. Louis due to the knee woes, is hitting a team-high .336 with eight homers and 40 RBIs in 62 games.
The Mets also announced that pitchers Johan Santana (elbow chips) and Oliver Perez (scarring on the right patella tendon) will both have surgery Tuesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.
