PORT ST. LUCIE — It hardly means that he’s going to revert to form, but Carlos Beltran singled on a liner to right in his first spring training at-bat on Sunday and then scored from second on Daniel Murphy’s base hit to right.
Beltran hadn’t played this spring while still getting his right knee back into shape and got his first start as the Mets DH against the Red Sox.
“I feel good,” Beltran said before the game at Digital Domain Park. “I’m ready.”
His first at-bat came in the second against Michael Bowman. He came up again in the third and fith innings batting right-handed and popped out to right both times in a game the Mets won 6-5.
But he insisted prior to the game that he didn’t consider his return as DH as overly important.
“For me, it’s not that big a deal,” Beltran said. “I want to be out there, but it’s just spring training. To me, I’ll be excited when the season starts.”
Mets manager Terry Collins said on Saturday that he hoped to use Beltran on consecutive days at DH, if he was up to it. Beltran is more concerned with being ready for Opening Day.
“It will take time, but I’ll get to where I want to be,” Beltran said. “Guys who try to do everything in spring training get in trouble.”
Collins thinks Beltran will be ready to start playing his new position, right field, in about a week- something Beltran was looking forward to.
“That will be a bigger step than being able to face a pitcher,” Beltran said.
