SEATTLE — The Yankees received a colossal scare in the fifth inning last night at Safeco Field when Franklin Gutierrez’s liner struck ace hurler CC Sabathia high on the chest for a single.

A little higher and it would have hit Sabathia’s jaw.

Yankees trainer Steve Donahue and Joe Girardi went to the mound where Sabathia pointed to the chest. He remained in the game and watched Alex Rodriguez’ throwing error lead to an unearned run. With the Yankees leading, 6-1, Mark Teixeira got Sabathia off the mound by reaching into the stands to glove Mike Sweeney’s foul pop for the final out.
