ARLINGTON, Texas — Andy Pettitte takes a big step Thursday in his rehab program from a left groin injury in Tampa when he pitches in a simulated situation.
If Pettitte doesn’t experience any problems, he likely would pitch in a minor-league game Tuesday in Trenton (Double-A).
When Pettitte went down July 18, the Yankees were hopeful he would be back by Sept. 1. With no setbacks he might return before then.
“I talked to him and told him, ‘Just pitch,’ ’’ Joe Girardi said. “And not worry about covering the bases. Just pitch.’’
