Red Sox legend Bill Lee collapsed during pregame festivities at the team’s Triple-A affiliate in Worcester on Thursday night in what the team called a “health scare.”

Lee, 76, was having a catch at Polar Park when he collapsed in the outfield, according to MassLive.

The outlet reported that Lee, who was scheduled to throw out the first pitch before the game between the Worcester Red Sox and Norfolk Tides, was able to walk under his own power back into the home dugout.

From there, he was reportedly checked on by EMTs and was even laughing.

He was eventually transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center, where he was pictured smiling and giving a thumbs up.

“We’re thankful to see this big smile from Bill Lee, who is in stable condition at UMass Memorial after experiencing a brief health scare earlier this evening,” the Worcester Red Sox tweeted after the incident.

“All of us in WooSox Nation are thinking of you, Spaceman!”

The team also released a statement that was read over the public address system, according to the Associated Press.

“While he seems to have recovered quickly, doctors have recommended checking him out at a nearby hospital just to be sure,” the team said. “He has experienced such episodes before, and has been fine thereafter.”

Lee also collapsed last year at a Savannah Bananas game after he suffered a “cardiac episode” that required a defibrillator.

“Without immediate intervention, I do not believe he’d be here today,” Town of Thunderbolt Administrator Bob Milie told The Associated Press a day after the cardiac episode last August.

“He wasn’t breathing,” said Milie, who’s also a firefighter in the Georgia town a few miles from Savannah. “It was very, very dire.”

Lee pitched 14 years in the major leagues, 10 with the Red Sox and four with the Expos.

An All-Star in 1973, he finished his career with a 119-90 record and 3.62 ERA across 416 games on the mound.

He was a key contributor to the Red Sox team who reached the 1975 World Series, winning 17 games in the regular season.

After his big league career, he’s played for various pro and semi-pro teams, making history as the oldest pitcher to win or appear in a professional game when he threw 5 1/3 innings for the Brockton Rox of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball at age 63 in 2010.
