Getty ImagesThe Mets have officially punted on the 2023 season.
David Robertson is gone. Max Scherzer is gone. Mark Canha is gone. Justin Verlander could potentially be gone.
A season that had World Series aspirations has turned into one that won’t even sniff the playoffs.
What a disappointment from top to bottom.
Billy Eppler’s trades, signings and lack of communication with the players has been an atrocity. It would be a shocker if he is still the GM after the season.
Where do the Mets go from here? Will they be going for a championship next season? Are they about to rebuild and make a long-suffering fan base wait even longer for a title?
Lots to discuss on a new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and me. We are joined by former Mets GM Jim Duquette.
‘Amazin’ But True’ Podcast with Jake Brown & Nelson Figueroa:
- SCHERZER TRADE: Mets get a top prospect in Luisangel Acuna. This was a strong move. Had to eat a bunch of money to make it happen.
- VERLANDER’S FUTURE: Mets would be wise to keep Verlander and let him be the ace in 2024. Trading him means filling at least three spots in the rotation, which will not be easy.
- EPPLER: His track record is poor and now players are concerned with direction of team. His communication with the team is awful.
- METS CLUBHOUSE: They seem disconnected this year. Not everyone hangs out with each other. Guys in their own groups. They are not playing for each other like last year. Losing also plays a part in that.

- ROBERTSON TRADE: Difficult to time it. They happen when they happened. Probably could have waited until closer to the deadline and got more for him.
- FRONT OFFICE MISCOMMUNICATION: There has been a disconnect with the communication coming from the front office to the players.
- VERLANDER: Not many big name starting pitchers available in free agency. Unless they can get a haul, Mets probably better off keeping him.
