When a team is destined to miss the playoffs, changes need to be made.

The Mets plan to start at the top.

Owner Steve Cohen said in June he’s still looking for a president of baseball operations to pair with general manager Billy Eppler.

The name leading most lists is David Stearns, the former president of baseball operations for the Brewers.

Stearns, however, remains under contract with Milwaukee as an adviser, so the Mets can’t approach him until the offseason begins.

Eppler joined “The Show with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman” podcast this week and was willing to play ball when asked about the GM getting some help.

“That was something that we talked about even before I ended up taking the position here,” Eppler said.

Of course, the dumpster fire that is the 2023 season has sent Cohen, Eppler and the Mets back to the drawing board.

They traded Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, along with others, before the Aug. 1 deadline and hit the reset button, putting championship aspirations on hold until 2025 at the earliest.

Eppler said he knows the bottom line is Cohen being satisfied the Mets are building a World Series contender.

If that means bringing in another body, so be it.

“My goal for the Mets is to be successful and to have a sustained winner over time,” Eppler told Sherman and Heyman. “And as far as a president of baseball ops … we have an opportunity to enhance leadership and help this organization be more successful. I’m going to embrace it.”

Eppler told the podcast: “a common goal and challenging each other and adding more talent to an organization is only going to be a good thing for that.

“I think that’s the right thing to do. And when that comes and when that happens, we will ultimately be governed by the opportunities that exist to bring in high-talented, high-caliber individuals.”
