A 12-2 record doesn’t carry as much weight as it used to.
The Blue Jays optioned Opening Day starter Drew Hutchison to Triple-A on Monday — just one day after the right-hander stifled the Yankees to just one earned run and three hits over six innings in a 3-1 victory to improve his win percentage to a league-high .857.
But Hutchison has battled consistency issues despite the 12 wins, pitching to a 5.06 ERA and allowing opposing hitters to bat .287. He has failed to complete six innings in 15 of his 24 starts — but has enjoyed league-best run support (6.71) from the best lineup in baseball.
Hutchison’s home-road splits have been downright bipolar. He’s 10-1 with a 2.57 ERA at Rogers Centre, but just 2-1 with a horrific 9.00 ERA away from home.
The Blue Jays don’t need a fifth starter until Aug. 29, with two off days in the midst of an eight-game road trip.
Hutchison sits behind David Price, Mark Buehrle, R.A. Dickey and Marco Estrada in the Blue Jays rotation.
