Bobby Cox will not have the Mets to kick around much longer.

The 68-year-old Braves manager announced yesterday he intends to retire after the 2010 season. Cox has managed the Braves since 1990 and had a run of 14 straight postseason appearances.

“I’m from Georgia, so I might be headed there next year,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said, laughing, when he heard about Cox’s announcement. “[Cox] is quite an icon in the sport. It’s unfortunate for the Braves, but probably fortunate for everybody else in the division.

“He’s really set the bar tremendously high over there.”
