What are the options?
Travis d’Arnaud landed on the DL Wednesday with a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, leaving the Mets thin behind the plate. Here’s a look at some backstop possibilities for the Amazin’s:
Jose Lobaton
The veteran was signed in the offseason to provide insurance. It’s expected the Mets will promote him from Triple-A Las Vegas on the next homestand after adding him to the 40-man roster. Lobaton has familiarity with the NL East after spending the past four seasons with the Nationals.
J.T. Realmuto
Marlins catcher is on the DL with a back contusion, but remains a trade piece for the rebuilding Marlins. Even so, the Mets would have to assemble a trade package of young prospects from a farm system that isn’t heavy on talent.
Jonathan Lucroy
Would be more a trade deadline move if Oakland is removed from playoff contention. The veteran is making just $6.5 million, after a market for his services failed to materialize over the winter.
Roberto Perez
Indians backup is tied to Mickey Callaway from their time together in Cleveland, where top prospect Francisco Mejia is close to ready.
Rene Rivera
Angels backup was well-respected by the Mets pitchers during his nearly two seasons with the club.
Miguel Montero
The veteran was designated for assignment by the Nationals on Wednesday, but he might not be an upgrade over anything the Mets already have in house.
