Bryce Harper, the 23-year-old Nationals star and the face of baseball’s new generation, paid his respects to one of the sport’s most storied characters on Wednesday night.

A few hours before Harper’s NL East-leading Nationals took the field against the host Dodgers, Harper seized the opportunity to visit 88-year-old Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully in his last season as the voice of the team, a career that began 67 years ago when the Dodgers still played in Brooklyn.

“I remember growing up turning on the television and or radio broadcast hearing the amazing and wonderful voice of Mr. Scully talking not only about the players numbers or how they were doing that year, but the stories of life and beyond that!” the reigning MVP wrote in an Instagram post dedicated to Scully.

“He will not only forever be part of the @dodgers, but also all around the game of baseball..Thank you for the memories and all the incredible things you taught people on and off the air!”

Harper and Scully exchanged questions and answers for about 20 minutes, ESPN reported, and Harper listened intently as Scully told him how he once dreamed of earning a place on the field, instead of in the booth he’s called home since 1950. Imitating his favorite player Mel Ott, who played for the New York Giants in the 1920s and 1930s, Scully laughed as he explained how he quickly learned he didn’t have the eye-hand coordination to match Ott’s home run prowess.
