Over the weekend, the Pirates designated for assignment pitcher Brian Bullington, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 draft. Here’s a list of some of the players drafted in the first round after Bullington, who hasn’t won a single big league game, in 2002: B.J. Upton, Adam Loewen, Zach Greinke, Prince Fielder, Jeff Francis, Jeremy Hermida, Joe Saunders, Russ Adams, Khalil Greene, Scott Kazmir, Nick Swisher, Cole Hamels, James Loney, Jeff Francoeur, Joe Blanton and Matt Cain.
I think it’s safe to say Bullington was an enormous bust. This is yet another example of the possibility that players like Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes never reach their potential. There’s just as good a chance of them being good as always being awful.
But if everything was a sure thing, then why bother watching?
