The Yanks signed Dan Giese as a minor league free agent over the winter to provide organizational relief depth at Triple-A. But due mostly to an injury to prospect Alan Horne, Giese was moved into the rotation. He lost on Monday night, but his one run in six innings marked the fifth time in five starts that the righty has permitted fewer than two runs. Yet Yankee officials say privately that Giese is not a candidate to be promoted to start in the majors. That is because, the officials say, Giese is just a two-pitch pitcher, and they do not believe that limited repertoire would permit him to have success in the majors.
