The team visits have faded, the hot stove is frigid and breadcrumbs are hard to come by.

Bryce Harper’s subtle social media activity will have to do.

The NHL’s Washington Capitals are prepared for the Nationals superstar to leave town after he left them behind — online at least.

“I know a couple of us got the unfollow the other day, so I don’t know if that’s writing on the wall or what,” wing Tom Wilson told reporters Monday of Harper, who rooted for his hometown Knights over the Capitals in the Stanley Cup. “But he’s been a leader in this city for a long time, and I know he kind of jumped the Caps ship with the Vegas bandwagon there, where he’s from, but I’m sure he’s going to make the best decision for him and for his family and for his future.”

On Twitter at least, Harper still is keeping tabs on Washington goalie Braden Holtby, but he’s the only Capital Harper follows. If Harper follows Wayne Simmonds or Erik Karlsson, though, it may be time for the Caps to panic.

The Harper sweepstakes has been, like everything in this offseason, slow moving. He last met Feb. 4 with the Giants, who are exploring whether Harper’s market value has tanked so much that he would accept a lucrative short-term deal. The Phillies are still the favorites to land the outfielder, with the Nationals, White Sox and Padres looming.
