Carlos Beltran is leaning on his past to help him as a first-time manager, except for looking back on old disagreements with the Mets.

The organization welcomed their former outfielder home Monday morning, introducing him as the 22nd manager in franchise history.

“I just can’t wait to rewrite our story, being the manager of the New York Mets,” Beltran said during a press conference at Citi Field.

Their last chapter ended on rocky terms, making Beltran’s hire somewhat surprising. Beltran spent 6 1/2 seasons playing for the Mets, but his battles with injuries led to tensions with the front office, including owner Fred Wilpon and COO Jeff Wilpon. The most notable episode came in 2011 when Fred Wilpon, in a New Yorker interview, described Beltran as “65 to 70 percent” of the player he once was.

But Beltran said Monday that none of that came up during the interview process.

“It wasn’t even discussed, honestly,” Beltran said. “It’s in the past. I would not be standing here if everything wasn’t clear with the organization. I’m excited to be back. It was a situation I was able to move forward, and I personally believe that you can’t progress in life if you’re thinking in the past. You have to be able to be conscious and live in the present moment.”

The Mets took nearly a month to hire their new manager after Mickey Callaway was fired. There were plenty of available candidates who boasted strong experience, including Joe Girardi, but general manager Brodie Van Wagenen opted for a first-timer instead.

“There were a lot of qualified candidates that brought different things to the table,” Van Wagenen said when asked about Girardi, who took the Phillies job instead. “We considered all of those candidates and their strengths, and ultimately it was Carlos’ strengths that won the day. It was less about where other candidates fell short and much more specifically about what Carlos’ leadership brings to our team.”
